Chas has been involved in energy efficiency as a researcher, codes and standards developer, trainer, implementer, inspector, and evaluator. He began his academic and early professional life in architecture but turned to more scientific pursuits such as lighting analysis as an undergraduate, and through summer internships and consulting work eventually became an expert user of the Radiance lighting simulation software. While a researcher at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory he was the technical lead for development of the Desktop Radiance software. At the Heschong-Mahone Group, he helped to develop the ENERGY STAR New Homes Multifamily program for a southern California investor-owned utility and later started an energy consulting and solar photovoltaics installation company. Chas crossed the “firewall” from implementation to evaluation to execute a contract with the CPUC to study the impacts of the 2005 Title-24 code and standards on the energy efficiency improvement of commercial new construction.
Chas has spent the past decade of his career evaluating the large commercial, agricultural, and industrial “custom” projects on behalf of the utility commissions, public service commissions, and utility companies across the country. He currently works at the Pacific Gas and Electric Company serving on the Custom Impact Team (CIT) performing pre-implementation quality control review of custom projects.
Chas has a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture and a Master of Science in Architecture (Building Science) from the University of California, Berkeley.
